Make It In Your Dental Market

Friday, February 18th, 2011

So you’ve just completed dental school, anxious to get out there in the dental world and make a name for yourself. There can be much confusion as to what the next step is. How can you break into an industry dominated primarily by an older generation who has already earned the trust of your local dental demographic. You may be able to have some success if you invest enough time and money into dental marketing but how can anyone know the length of time needed to have a solid clientele built up?

Specialization into a specific area of dentistry may be your best bet. Studies show that approximately 80% of all dentist practice general dentistry, and 20% are specialists. Typically speaking most states allow dental school graduates to enter the practice of general dentistry immediatley upon graduation. There are also other options other than the traditional private practice of dentistry, such as academic dentistry and dental research, but we’ll talk about that another time. A specialization is a much easier way to cement yourself in the industry, as people will be looking for your area of expertise specifically. This is where dental marketing companies can come in handy. They provide the most consistent lead generation because they market to those directly in your area. This is the way many dentists first start out, and with a little help in this area you can have return clients for years.

In The Hands Of Your TMJ Dentist

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Doctors have the benefit of knowing what’s going on. Even when they try to explain things to you in the simplest terms possible, they are often times still the only ones who know what is going on.

When making important decisions regarding the path taken to a surgery or a simpler corrective procedure, will you want to be in the loop? Say you’re searching for a TMJ solution, well it may be beneficial to prioritize your needs and ask yourself a few questions.

  1. Do I want to work with a TMJ medical care provider who helps me make decisions and explains thoroughly the choices I have in treatment methods?
  2. Do I want TMJ dentists to make the decisions for me based on their professional experience? Do I trust my dentist that much?

If you’re willing to do a lot of the research yourself, then more doors will be open and more possibilities for solutions will be presented. But if you’re not willing to do research, then you’ll need to find a TMJ dentist who you are comfortable with, because they’ll be making most of the decisions for you. Also take into account whether or not you’re interested in the newest treatments, or what has been proven to help.

Create Your Own Home Photography Studio

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

In photography they say that lighting is everything, which would make sense considering the literal translation of photography is “painting with light”. A problem that people can find with doing studio photography is that they have to do a lot more work than with natural light. With natural light, the sun gives us wonderful opportunities to capture incredible images at various points in the day. With that in mind, how can you optimally use what you have available to create your own home studio?

  1. Go no further than your spare bedroom (garage, etc.)- Having your own studio at home is great because you can work whenever you have the time. Setting up backdrops for photography is a fun, creative task in itself. This also means that all of the equipment will belong to you, so you can go on location with your equipment whenever you please.
  2. Floor-based vs. Ceiling-based- It says it all in the title, do you want your lights standing from the floor, or hanging from the ceiling? These two options will produce different effects, and depending on what pictures you’re taking you’ll want to do some research to make sure you make the right choice. Now there are many different things you can get regarding lighting, but we’ll save that for another time.
  3. All the extras- There are so many ways to spice up a photo. Whether it be dead flowers, a fog machine, or colored filters you can turn any photo from bland to fantastic. Consider investing in faux floor mats to add an authentic old-time feel to any picture.

Life is very busy nowadays, with people having to wear two or three different hats. Keep your options open, but keep them close to home.

A Dentist That Specializes In You

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

In an average lifespan you’ll have 3 to 4 tooth related emergencies and considering there seems to be about a million different things that can go wrong with dental health, are you seeing the Boise dental specialist right for your scenario? Typically three or more years of undergraduate education on top of the four years of dental school is required to become a dentist. This may seem like a lot of school, but even more post-graduate training is required to become a dental specialist in a certain field (i.e. orthodontist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or periodontist).

  1. Orthodontics- also known as the first specialty of dentistry that is focused on the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both.
  2. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery- surgery to correct a swide spectrum of disease, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.
  3. Prosthodontics- dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth. Orthodontic treatments can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. Orthodontic treatment can be done for purely aesthetic reasons.
  4. Periodontics- focuses on the supporting structures of teeth, diseases, and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.

    (definitions taken from Wikipedia)

These are just four of the nine specialty fields of dentistry. This may help you see the importance of seeing a specialist focused on your specific area of need. A more general comparison is noting there is a big difference between a Medical Doctor and a Veterinarian. There are definitely cases where dentists have a wide array of skills, focusing on more than one dental specialty. If you find a reliable dentist in Boise that wears more than one hat, stick to them and never let them go.

Tips to Make Your Roof Last

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

There are many details about a home that most people do not know. Unless you’re a pro roofer, much like many of the Salt Lake City roofing community, you’ll need some tips on your roof. One of those little details is the importance of having attic ventilation in regards to the long life of your roof, very specific, I know. Think of the attic as a buffer zone between the elements outside your home and the space for living on the inside. Here are a few facts you should keep in mind when building a home.

  1. Proper attic ventilation will remove moisture and heat from the attic. Trapped heat and moisture can raise energy costs as well as damage the structural and personal items located inside the attic.
  2. The use of washing machines, bath tubs, dish washers and showers can accelerate the formation of condensation in your attic.
  3. The first thing water vapor looks for to condense to is metal, so anything metallic will be the first to rust. This means weakness pipes, plumbing straps and nails could jeopardize the safety of your home internally.
  4. When you’re in a colder climate and the cold temperatures combine with a high humidity (40% or greater) frost can form on the bottom of the roof deck. This could result in Dry Rot.
  5. Not only is mildew damaging to your home, but it also is a health risk for your family.
  6. Melting snow continually refreezing at the roof perimeter and then backing up under the shingles to cause leaks is called an Ice Dam, which is extremely harmful to your roof.

All of these situations can be prevented or corrected depending on what steps and how quickly you decide to act. Contact a trustworthy roofer in Salt Lake City to get some helpful tips. Who knows, you might even form a mutually beneficial relationship that could last for years.

Invite Them To Stay A While

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

When adding a new room to your home, your goal is to make sure guests or family members will receive that warm and inviting feeling anyone desires to instill in others with their interior design. You’ll want the room to be brightly lit, that is for certain, but what other aspects can you strategically add to create the seemingly perfect feng shui that is so sought after? A great way to draw attention to a room is use wall letter stickers, but another great tip is to decorate with mirrors. It is said that the proper mirror placement you can give the illusion of doubling the size of the room. A smaller mirror gives the impression of an open window, but you can also expand a room visually by reflecting the surround space off a much larger mirror.

The color of a room is also very important. You can strategically add different intensities of color to a room to bring out the important aspects you want people to notice. Here is a good guide to go by:

  1. Endless Background- Choosing a light color for the background is imperative due to defining the size of the room. With a lighter color, you can make the room seem much larger, as a darker color will make it feel cramped and small.
  2. Open to the Mid-range- Focusing on having a medium color for your furniture and windows can set a more relaxed mood for the room. With colors blending into the lighter background it will give the room a great foundation.
  3. Dark yet Alluring- The smaller accessories of a room should be a darker color, as more intense colors draw your attention almost immediately. Setting up the dark accessories can help guide eyes to what you want eyes to be focused on in a room. Such an example is vinyl wall lettering quotes, with the letterings drawing attention to where you’d like.

There are so many factors in making a room appealing to the eye. Not only appealing, but providing a desired homey feeling that will make the passer-bys into long-term residents of your humble, yet strategically decorated room.

Clean Out The Nest and Declutter Your Life!

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Homes are a notorious place for losing things, coming in a close fourth to the sixth dimension, the Bermuda triangle and a dogs stomach. Not everybody has the benefit of having things put up vinyl wall lettering in plain sight for them to read. The crazy part is once you get it clean, it will stay that way for about 5 minutes until the whirlwind of chaos and destruction (your children, even though you love them dearly) come tearing through, leaving a wake of destruction and disorganization in their path. The amount of work that needs to be done seems insurmountable, but trust me, there is hope. Keep it simple, and do NOT put it off until that evasive, sometimes mythic time called “Spring Cleaning”.

  1. The Inside Out- Closets should be the first area to tackle. Make sure you have some place to put the extra “treasure” you will undoubtedly find while digging through these out of sight and out of mind areas. Now this may be a hard thing to do for some pack rats, but you’ll need to get rid of the things you DON’T USE. Sure having a mini-trampoline from the ’70s may seem cool, but trust me, it is very pointless and takes up a lot of needed space. Do not take your time getting rid of these things, as nostalgia may set in and you’ll be back at square one.
  2. The Pack Rats Nest- Everybody has one, a designated area for all of the “treasures” you’ve collected throughout your life. It’s much like a ship graveyard, with random little treasures that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but really have little value. Of course, the ships in the graveyard all belonged to pawn shop owners toting the useless junk they aren’t able to sell around the sea. It doesn’t matter if Val Kilmer once chewed on that toothpick, it needs to go. When you declutter your life, you’re able to think more clearly and gain a peace of mind that crowded confusion just cannot provide. I’m not saying everything in this junk drawer is useless, but trust me, most of it is.
  3. Room by Room- Repeat this process in every drawer and room in your home. I promise you once this is done you will feel like a new person.
  4. Keep it That Way- The next step may be the hardest for some people. If you don’t have the habit already in place, continuous cleaning can seem like putting salt on an open wound. Your home is meant to be your sanctuary, where you only are required to do the work YOU want to do. Believe me, this is work you want to do. Make a chore list, even put it on the wall with vinyl lettering for walls, that way the order of things will be set in metaphorical stone.

It has been shown that lots of clutter in ones home increases stress greatly. Nobody needs stress, no one should have stress in their lives, especially unnecessary stress. Thankfully this is one type of stress that can be prevented.

Recovering from information overload (McKinsey Quarterly)

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

By Amazing Firms Amazing Practices, Gerry Riskin.

All of the Managing Partners with whom I work are devoured by their "multitasking work environments".  "Recovering from information overload" (McKinsey Quarterly, January 2011) authors Derek Dean and Caroline Webb have succinctly laid out their take on the problems and solutions:

Problems (multitasking):

slows us down,

hampers creativity and

makes us anxious and it’s addictive)

Solutions (Coping with the deluge):

Focus,

Filter and

Forget

Perhaps the most valuable part of the article lies in an exploration of how to hit the "reset button".

If you are the Managing Partner (or have any leadership responsibilities in your firm) I suggest you read this article twice, once to assimilate it and next to make your action plan for the parts or pieces you want to implement.  Download the PDF or read online.
