Alternative TMJ Solutions

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) causes tenderness or pain in the joint. It can be caused from several different things such as arthritis, a jaw injury, and grinding teeth. Most discomfort caused by TMJ can be taken care of with home remedies however in severe cases it will need to be treated by a TMJ dentist.

TMJ solutions can be rather expensive. But there are some alternative holistic approaches that you may want to research and talk with your TMJ dentist about. Recently there has been a renewed interest in these alternative treatments that have proven promising to relieve pain caused by TMJ.

  • Medical Acupuncture:Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years; however it is a relatively new to the United States. Medical acupuncture for TMJ targets the muscles surrounding the tempromandibular joints by inserting hair like stainless steel needles into the skin to relieve pain. Studies have proven it to be an effective TMJ solution.
  • Cranial Osteopathy:Cranial osteopathy focuses on the disruption in the cranial rhythm caused by stress. Trained cranial osteopaths are able to feel these subtle rhythmic changes and compare them to what is considered to be the ideal in order to reduce or eliminate a patient’s pain. The end goal of cranial osteopathy is to treat the whole person, not just the ailment. So, by getting treated for your TMJ, you may also get some additional benefits as well.
  • Organic Herbal Remedies:The body is an amazing thing and with the right nutritional support it can heal itself. Some suffers of TMJ find better success with taking herbal remedies rather than using traditional pain killers.

Overview of Personal Injury Law

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

We’ve all seen those advertisements by lawyers promoting their services for personal injury cases. A majority of them get a bad rap as “ambulance chasers”. However, personal injury law reaches further than what many may realize. Personal injury occurs when someone has suffered some form of injury, either physical or psychological, as the result of an accident.

Most personal injuries fall into what the legal world knows as a tort which is a civil wrong which causes action. Torts occur when someone either deliberately or through carelessness causes harm or loss to another person. Torts include four elements which are the existence of a legal duty owed by a person to others, the breach of duty by that person, the breach of that duty causing harm to others, and the damages caused.

The list of personal injuries stretch from wrongful death to defamation and from medical malpractice to a breach of warranty. The most common types of personal injury cases are traffic accidents, accidents at work, assault claims, and product defect accidents.

The majority of personal injury attorneys in Utah have training in all areas of law but are specifically knowledgeable in tort law. Most personal injury lawyers settle their cases outside of court rather than going to trial. Before hiring a lawyer be sure you do your research and know your rights.

Utah Post Adoptive Contact Legal Tips

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Adopting a child is an exciting process with many things you need to consider. One topic that you should discuss with your spouse ahead of time is post adoption contact. It is the adoptive parent’s decision as to who can have contact with the child and how much contact. Usually a written contractual agreement between the adoptive parents and the birth parents is written for clarification and enforcement purposes.

Contact can be limited to just the birth parents or extended to other members of the child’s birth parents who have significant ties to the child. This contact can be in the form of cards, letters, photos, or even personal visits. The adoptive parents must decide what they feel comfortable with and then work with attorneys and the birth parents to come upon an agreement. To be enforced, the contract has to be brought before a judge and all parties involved must give a written agreement before the adoption is finalized. Any modifications must be brought to the court as well.

There are 22 states that enforce post adoption contact agreements. Utah is an example of a state that does not have enforceable agreements. In this case, you should consult with a Utah lawyer as to what you should do. Utah is a closed records state meaning that no identifying information will be released unless consent is given from both the adopted child and the birth mother. Most adoption agencies will not facilitate any contact until the adopted is 18 or 21 unless the had a semi open adoption. Make sure you have a good understanding of your rights as an adoptive parent.

Before you finalize your adoption, make sure that you discuss this item with your spouse and Utah attorney to make sure you keep the child’s best interests in mind.

Seeking Affordable Dental Care

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

It’s not secret that financial difficulties are one of the leading stress factors within families in today’s economy. This also has translated into not obtaining proper dental care due to what people are focusing their budgets on. Not only does this have a large chance for serious health repercussions, but it also shows the habit of improper care to those who look to you as an example. This is a very vicious cycle indeed, ignoring timely trips to the dentist can further troubles like dental infections, which will end up being much more expensive to treat. A dentist who has recently moved into the area with the help of dental practice brokers may often have discount programs that you may not know about unless you ask. In fact, many dentists in the U.S. provide special discount programs which could end up saving you 10-50% of the original costs. This seems like something work looking into.

Doing very thorough research is also a prime way to find the most affordable dental health care services. The internet can be a wonderful tool as we all know and in this case it shouldn’t be any different. There are also many services out there that help find the most affordable dental care for low income adults and children. This helps where the lack of proper funding has been a deterrent in seeking dental care in the first place. Low-income families also have the advantage of government-run programs which are available at most local community health clinics.

Let’s recap:

  • Be proactive about finding proper dental health care.
  • Do research on ways to find affordable dental care, use the internet as a primary tool.
  • If you’re low enough income, check out your local community health care clinic for government grants.

Now, this a list of only a few things you can do and believe me, there is much more than can be done. My suggestion would be to find a dentist who is selling a dental practice, as the new dentist will be in need of the patronage and may offer special deals.

Common Day Infectious Diseases

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Communicable diseases, or infectious diseases as they are sometimes known, are often caused by pathogens passed from one human to another. The methods that these pathogens are transmitted are typically done by contact, whether it be mucus, sexual, breath, saliva, or blood contact. These pathogens can survive on a seemingly limitless amount of surfaces, all which serve as a medium for passing these diseases to others. Pathogens can either be fungal, parasitic, bacterial or viral, which makes them pretty hard to get rid of. There are several communicable diseases that you’ve already had, but there are many you probably haven’t. Here is a list of 4 infectious diseases that are the most common to find in communities around you.

  1. Pink Eye- A contagious form of bacterial or viral conjunctivitis, the same virus that causes the common cold also causes viral pink eye. To help reduce your chances of pink eye, make certain to avoid touching your eye with anything that may have the pathogen on it. Maintaining good hygiene is the perfect way to prevent.
  2. Hepatitis- Whether it be Hep A or Hep B, this autoimmune disease is a viral infection of the liver which can cause inflammation in the effected area. There is no true way to protect yourself from this virus, but again, good hygiene is key.
  3. Common Cold- There is an estimated 1 billion colds hitting Americans each year. This viral infection targets children who have not quite built an immunity to this tenured virus. Make certain to wash your hands when coming in contact with anything that could be contaminated.
  4. Strep Throat- This bacteria has a high chance to effect teenagers, mostly due to attending school where the bacteria can be easily spread. Avoiding shaking hands, sneezing and coughing are all easy ways to help prevent this hindering sickness. Make certain to catch this early, as antibiotics are a proven method of defeating this foe.

You may not have known that communicable diseases are as common as a cold. The pattern here is good hygiene, when it is practiced the chances of having these sicknesses spread around your home are reduced drastically. Do your part and save others the pain of these heavily populated afflictions.

Jury Selection Screening Going Social?

Monday, March 7th, 2011

We’ve all heard it before, be careful what you post on Facebook. It’s common knowledge that potential employers check applicant’s Facebook profiles. But, a recent trend that may surprise you is that law firms have begun doing the same thing when screening potential jurors. It is a rather recent trend, however many attorneys are saying that it is a good tool to use to find out more information about those serving on jury duty.

For each court case, there are between 30 to 60 potential jury members who are asked to come and go through a screening process. The plaintiff’s and defendant’s lawyers will are present. The screening process includes and evaluation of each person’s belief’s and attitudes in order to determine whether or not they will be able to act unbiased. Each juror is analyzed until they have narrowed it down to the 6 to 12 jurors they believe will give the most neutral, unbiased decision.

Several criminal defense lawyers are turning to Facebook because they say it can offer information that a regular background check or jury questionnaire does not. Things such as comments, status updates, groups, and hobbies can give lawyers a better sense of someone’s opinions and whether or not they would be able to make an unbiased decision. They argue that people tend to be more honest in their profiles than they would be in jury screening processes.

Some feel that using Facebook and other social media websites in the screening process may interfere with one’s privacy. Questions and concerns have been raised but there have been no issue with it yet.

Help Prevent Through Healthy Living

Monday, March 7th, 2011

The unfortunate truth is that diseases such as Hepatitis B and Herpes have become household names throughout much of the 20th century. It is hard to believe that something so common and relatively non life-threatening does not have a solid cure, nor is there any glimpse of one on the horizon. The good news is that our bodies will continually try and fight off these infections. Hepatitis A can actually be successfully fought off within months and there are usually no long-term effects from the infection. This isn’t the case for the other strains of the Hepatitis virus as there is no definite cure for the B and C strains.

There is no way to guaranteed way to prevent the Hepatitis virus, but at the same time prevention is the only way to reduce your risk. It is said that the Hepatitis B virus is contracted through being exposed to areas that have poor hygienic maintenance. So cleaning up as much as you can and avoiding contact with things you know to be full of germs could definitely drop the risk factor. Keeping your immune system in tip top shape is also highly recommended. This requires eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, excercising and allowing yourself plenty of rest at nights. Since prevention is the only way that means the power to prevent lies squarely in your hands. Now, if the only way to help prevent catching a lifestyle changing disease were to live healthier, wouldn’t I be willing to make the change?

Know Your Strains – Hepatitis

Monday, March 7th, 2011

The word hepatitis is commonly associated with a disease that causes concern and worry to those who aren’t even quite sure what it means. Are there different types of hepatitis and what symptoms are associated with them? All of these disease do cause an inflamed liver, but there is more to each individual virus than that. Here we will go over some brief facts regarding the infectious disease known as Hepatitis.

  • Hep A- An interesting fact is that some people infected with the Hepatitis virus don’t get very sick at all. Young children are even less likely to show any symptoms of the virus. Symptoms that can occur with the virus are loss of appetite, liver pains, jaundice and possibly liver pain.
  • Hep B- The difference between Hep A and Hep B might only be a few symptoms, but they are symptoms where you can implicitly know the difference. Loss of sleep unfortunately can come with Hep B, along with occasional fevers and pain in the joints.
  • Hep C- Consistent lethargy and flu-like symptoms accompany Hepatitis C. A soreness in the upper right part of the belly under the ribs is a constant.

Ways to spread these viruses are many and often related to bodily fluids. While it may seem there are few benefits to having any disease, oftentimes there can be an unexpected up-side. Donating your blood for research can be profitable and it furthers the positive study of potential cures or treatments for Hepatitis.
