Trade Show Trends for 2011

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Whether you’re wondering what you can expect to see in the booths at an upcoming trade show or you are just looking for ideas for your custom trade show display, taking a look a the trends are always a good idea. Here’s what you can expect at this summer’s trade shows:

  • More Competition
It is predicted that trade shows with the United States will have more vendors than in previous years. Believe it or not folks, the economy is on the rise. Businesses have bigger budgets and new products.
  • Larger Than Life Graphics
This year custom trade show booths will have attention grabbing mural graphics on their displays largely due to the discontinuance of Front Runner fabric.
  • Social Media
Exhibitors will put social media to use to get more attendees into their booth. This will help to increase interactivity as well as attendance. Social media will also be used to help get the word out on promotions.
  • iPads Take It Away
Because iPads’ size makes them so portable, and since they are so easy to use many booths will be incorporating them into their display designs. They are a great way to create more interactivity and make sales easy. They are also the most offered trade show contest giveaway surpassing the iPod.

As with every year, there are lots of new innovations popping up within every custom trade show booth. If you’re a business owner be sure to take note of them at your next event. If you’re just a trade show visitor, enjoy them!

Children’s Dental Care Dilemma

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

In the state of California, one fourth of children under the age of 12 have never been to a dentist. This number is frightening when it comes to preventative dental care. Starting at a young age, consistent visits to the dentist can help reduce or eliminate major dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, or tooth replacement in Orange CA. The state is working on a solution so that children can get the dental health they need.

Some are offering the solution to wait until the national heath care law goes into effect in 2014 which would give an estimated one million Californian children dental care access. However, the state’s Medi-Cal program already has issues as many dentists are not taking Medi-Cal patients. In addition, the state has plans to further reduce reimbursement rates by 10%. Many say California has a long way to go before affordable dental care will be available.

Some have been looking at examples from other states to find solutions. The main problem is there is a limited number of dentists and a high demand. The most obvious solution would be to expand the workforce, however a dentist in Orange Ca requires several years of expensive training. The solution? Dental therapists.

Dental therapist programs have proven to work in 53 other countries and is even being used in Alaska to reach isolated Native American communities. These dental therapists would be trained on specific procedures and work under the supervision of a licensed dentist. They would be able to meet the basic needs of low-income, rural, and under-served children in the state. They would be able to be trained in preventative dental care to help lessen the amount of time, money, and energy that would need to be spent on dental care in the future.

A creative solution to a major dental health care problem. The bottom line is children need to be insured and have access to visit a dentist. Providing preventive care now will save the state and Californians money in years to come.

Summer Mosquitoes

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

This past May was the wettest in Utah’s recorded history. The month was cold, dreary, and seemed like summer was never going to come. The wet weather in May however, may have lasting effects on our summer. All of the extra water provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes. As it gets into the summer months and warms up, we could be in for a lot of mosquitoes. This gives good reason to start prevention efforts now.

What is so dangerous about mosquitoes? They can cause more harm than itchy red bumps on your arms and legs. Mosquitoes carry the West Nile Virus. It first appeared in Utah in 2003 and peaked in 2006 with 158 confirmed cases of the disease and 5 deaths in the state. Currently, the Heath Department is taking preventative measures by spraying around area of water. There are a few things you can do as well to protect your home from these pesky bugs.

Clean Out Places Where Water Collects
If you look around your home, you are sure to find a few places where water collects. Get rid of stagnant water to help get rid of mosquitoes on your property. One area that many people forget about are their rain gutters. Rain gutters Utah collect a lot of debris throughout the year which causes stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed. If you can’t clean them yourself, call a Utah rain gutter company to come clean them for you.

Keep Ponds Clean
If you have a garden pond, drain it or use a mosquito dunk to keep mosquitoes at bay. A mosquito dunk is filled with bacteria toxins and can be purchased at any hardware store.

Once all is said and done, the bottom line is just to avoid getting bitten. Experts suggest using an insect repellent with more than 25% DEET, avoid going out at dusk, and wear long sleeve clothing to avoid exposed skin when near bodies of water. Protect yourself and have a safe summer!

Life Expectancy and Your Oral Health

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

With advancements in the medical industry, people are living longer than ever. In the United States, the life expectancy of males is 76 years and 81 for women. Something very few people think about as they try to keep healthy is dental care. Most are concerned with exercise, eating right, and other preventative care measures. However, shouldn’t your teeth get some attention too?

A Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist warns against not taking care of your teeth. Flossing, brushing, eating right, and regular check ups are critical for keeping gum diseases at bay. In fact, these simple habits can really make a difference in the long run and help you to keep your teeth longer. Over the years, cosmetic dentists have seen an increase in patients who didn’t take good care of their teeth and now that their older, they want to get a younger, healthier smile. This can be a painful process and simple preventative care could have helped them to avoid it in the first place.

Some things to watch for as you get older are signs of gum disease. The healthier your gums, the longer you will keep your teeth. The fact of the matter is many of us have probably experienced the beginning stages of gum disease. These symptoms include, bleeding gums, swollen or tender gums, receding gums, changes in how your teeth line up, and constant bad breath. The key to preventing gum disease is flossing, brushing, regular checkups, and did I say flossing?

If your smile has been taken away because of aging teeth, talk to a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills to find out what you can do. Pulling and dentures are a thing of the past. Keep your smile for your lifetime. Take cane of yourself…and your mouth.

Prepare Your Dental Practice for Your Retirement

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Selling a dental practice takes some planning ahead of time. Even if your are not going to be retiring for another 5 years, there are some thing you should be doing now to sell a dental practice in the future.

Gather Documentation
As a seller, you will need to provide documentation in order to get a valuation and provide the supporting materials to prove that your practice is worth what you are asking for. On average, buyers spend around $500,000 on a dental practice and that is in no way a small investment. Prospective buyers will require it from you. You will need things like the past 3-5 years’ tax returns, financial statement, list of active patients, fee schedule, etc. This can be time consuming so start now.

Meet with Professionals
Meet with dental practice broker, your CPA, and attorney to start making a plan. This will help you plan for when the best time would be for you to retire and also start gathering the necessary documents you will need in order to sell. Selling a dental practice is complex and you will need experienced help to make sure you get the largest return you can.

Prepare your Staff
When you sell your practice, you are affecting your entire staff. Some dentists feel it is better to let their staff know their intentions earlier than later, but it is really up to you. When selling your practice, try to keep your staff’s needs in mind so they are taken care of after you have entered retirement.

Make Affordable Improvements
Making improvements can greatly help increase the final sale amount of your dental practice. Paint and new flooring are not that expensive and can make a big improvement in how your office looks. If you are a few years away from selling, you could invest in newer equipment to assist in the future sale as well.

With the right preparation, you can make sure that the future sale of your dental practice goes smoothly.

Success Stories for the Ages

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Innovation starts with an idea and a piece of paper! Well, that may seem like your typical rags to riches story when you’re speaking of successful small businesses, but it is very interesting to think of how so many big companies we see today got their incredible start on the path to success. While it is not know whether they looked into trademark investigations, there are a lot of admirable stories in this lot.

  • No Electricity? No problem! – As a part of Amish beliefs, they refuse to use modern-day conveniences that we so take for granted. Amos Miller, the runner of Miller Farm in Pennsylvania, brought his small farm from a self-sufficiency goldmine to a 1.8$ million dollars a year national food retailer. The most amazing part of it all is that he did it with NO electricity, NO cell phones, and NO internet. With small businesses often only being an online presence, it’s incredible to see what hard work with just your bare hands can do.
  • Shopping, Revolutionized – Yes, shopping in style, from the comfort of your home without even taking off those ridiculous goldfish pajama bottoms. Thanks to eBay, most consumers nowadays can get the best price for the best product through online bidding wars. The beginning of eBay is due to Pierre Omidyar, who as a 28-year-old in 1995 wrote the code for an auction website that would be refined into what eBay is today. The first item auctioned was a broken laser pointer, who coincidentally was bought by a collector of broken laser pointers. Pierre knew this was going to be huge, especially since the broken laser pointer was meant as a test auction. By the time eBay went public in 1998, the founders were billionaires, which is about as successful a start-up company as one can get.
  • Oprah Empire – Now this may not seem like a small business success story, but when you start out with only yourself as a main selling point, the story is worth telling. Starting out in complete poverty in rural Mississippi living on her grandmother’s farm, she moved to Wisconsin with her mother to try and escape the poverty cycle. After life-changing incidents that would forever shape the way she cares for other people, she moved to Tennessee to live with her father, and flourished. She started as a talk show host and through her positive attitude gave women everywhere the hope they needed. Expanding into books, film, and magazines, she has built an empire that will influence the world for years to come.

Now, there’s not much of a chance that these people will need any domain name acquisition, but they did have to take a lot of risks to get where they’re at today.

Why you need to see Mark Zuckerberg’s personal stationery

Monday, June 13th, 2011

By Amazing Firms Amazing Practices, Gerry Riskin.

The irony is too delicious to pass up. Mark Zuckerberg has invented one of the most powerful communication tools ever known to mankind. Facebook has literally started revolutions.

Why, then, would the most successful communications entrepreneur in history regress to a pre-internet form of communication? For the same reason Jack Welch did as president of General Electric.

Not only is a handwritten letter more powerful than e-mail, but it’s horsepower is increasing exponentially. Why? Because it is ever rarer.

If you want to increase your influence and the impact of your important communications,  get some personal stationery suited for the purpose and use it.

You may not believe this, but in my experience with powerful members of the executive of many top law firms, personal notes they have received from their colleagues or clients are carefully saved for years along with other precious personal possessions.

Loving Summer Food

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Now that I have moved away from home, I have gained a much deeper appreciation for Wisconsin summer food. My husband thinks it’s a bit ridiculous that when I talk about summer in Wisconsin, my memories always are peppered with some mention of food. Maybe it can be traced back to how my family gatherings always seem to be centered around food, or maybe it’s just who I am and food is a passion in my life. Or maybe, traditional summer food in Wisconsin just flat out rocks the tastebuds.

Raspberry Rhubarb Custard Pie
When I was little, I remember going to my grandparents farm in the summers and picking raspberries in their back yard. We would get buckets of them. (Our buckets were never as full as they could have been because eating raspberries is part of the picking process.) We would bring them inside and Grandma would make her famous raspberry rhubarb custard pie. If the Schwans man had stopped by we’d get a bit of creamy cold vanillia ice cream to top it off.

Ingredients

  1. 3 eggs, beaten slightly
  2. 3 tablespoons milk
  3. 1 cup raspberries
  4. 4 cups cut-up pink rhubarb
  5. 2 cups sugar
  6. 1/4 cup flour
  7. 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  8. 1 tablespoon butter
  9. dough for 2 pie crusts

Directions

Mix together eggs and milk. Set aside.

Cook the rhubarb, raspberries, sugar, flour and nutmeg. Mix both mixtures together and pour into prepared pastry dough in pie pan. Dot with butter before putting on top crust.

Seat top crust to bottom by moistening rim of bottom crust with water. Press crust together by pinching around the edge. Cut vent holes into the top crust.

Bake at 375°F for approximately 40 minutes.

Snow Cones
Whether we were at the county fair or just stopping by a stand down by the pool, snow cones were always the best summer treat to cool you down. I remember being so intruiged by watching the ice cubes go into the snow cone machine and seeing it transformed to shaved ice. My favorite flavors were strawberry-coconut, Tigersblood, or blue raspberry. Such an easy and sweet treat to cool off with.

Brats off the Grill
There is nothing better than a brat hot off the grill. For special get togethers like the 4th of July, my dad would always run over to our local brat shop that made a variety of specialty brat flavors. Add some mustard, relish, and onions and you’re good to go. Over Memorial Day weekend, the city of Madison actually hosts Brat Fest. They bring in gigantic grills to grill up over a million brats during the weekend. If you’re in Madison over Memorial Day weekend, this is one event you can’t miss.

My list of Wisconsin summer food could go on and on, but I’d better stop before I get too homesick. Whether it was Grandma’s pie, cool snow cones, or a spicy brat there is nothing much better than summer food.

Save Money at the Clinic!

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

For a lot of us, I think trying to understand all of the details of health insurance and billing can be quite confusing and overwhelming. If you’re like me, when it comes to things I just can’t get a handle on, I stop asking questions and just take it at face value to move on to more important things. Howver, in doing so, I’ve realized I’ve missed out on a lot of money saving opportunities because I either didn’t know or didn’t ask. Let me tell you, it really pays to ask!

Ask Around
When having to pay for large expenses, we usually shop around looking for the best deal. But, for some reason when it comes to our medical expenses, we don’t usually do that. We go to our doctor, have the procedure, and then get the bill in the mail. In one case, a patient called around to three different hospitals asking about the cost for the same surgery and the estimates ranged from $14,000 to $18,000. The same goes for prescriptions as well. Different pharmacies may offer the same medication at different costs.

Ask About Discounts
There are several heath care offices such as Kaysville Clinic that will offer a discount if you pay at the time of treatment. Some clinics and hospitals have set polices regarding any type of discount, but you can also negotiate as well. One new father was able to knock off $1000 of the cost of his daughter’s birth just by asking the hospital, obstetrician, anethesiologist, and pediatrician to reduce their bills by 25% if he paid the bill in full.

Ask About the Bill
Savings don’t stop when the bill is in hand. Be sure to ask for an itemized bill and look for any mistakes or double billing which unfortunately can be quite common. Make sure you’re not being billed seperately for a room and all the standard amenities, like sheets and a toothbrush. Look for items like “kits” and “trays”. You can get up to a 35% discount just by challenging individual items.

Don’t look at your health care costs as the final word. There are many health care facilities like your local Kaysville family practice, who want to help improve the quality of your physical and financial life. Don’t be afraid to ask. In the end, the worst they could say is no.

Smart and Safe Remodeling

Monday, June 6th, 2011

So you’re considering renovating your home and you’re not sure what you can do to make things better. The main goal is to make the space you have more livable, or add increased value to your home if you’re considering selling it in the future. There are many places you can visit in regards to improving your home. Your local building store is a great place to meet people who have dedicated their lives to continually improving their businesses or homes. Wherever you go, make sure you can sort out and recognize what you’d consider “your style”. Investing in a window well is one of the best things you can do, but we’ll talk more about that later.

  • Kitchen – Very often referred to as the “heart of the home”, kitchens have the ability to bring people together with promises of food and good conversation. When renovating a kitchen you must plan as much as possible, in the planning is where you save the most time and money. The most important investment you can make in remodeling a kitchen is putting up a big window. If you have a light color in your kitchen, this window will make it seem much larger.
  • Bathrooms – Second to only kitchen remodeling in regards to cost and pain of work, bathroom remodeling requires one to think beyond the fancy tiles and exorbitant mirrors. While the primary focus of remodeling a bathroom is to bring up the value of a home, it doesn’t hurt to optimize this small space for maximum relaxation. While in the past remodeling a bathroom may just have been for purely aesthetic reasons, such as adding a color scheme that would match the homes current color, installing large tubs that successfully ease the mind of those within has become more and more popular. It could be said that the most important aspect in remodeling a bathroom is to make it pleasing to the eye, as that is what people will judge when they’re interested in buying a remodeled home.
  • Outdoors – With houses being closer and closer together, making usable space outside of your home virtually nonexistent, its important to do what you can with what you have. This means all of the small details, including adding basement egress window wells, must be planned and executed to perfection. There have been studies that show doing the little things such as adding new mulch or woodchips give people a sense of cleanliness and raise the chance of spending more time in their outdoor area.
