Keeping your Employees Happy

Friday, July 29th, 2011

As a business owner, you want to make sure that you take care of your employees. If you have happy employees, they are more enthusiastic about working for your company, are more productive and feel like they are important at your company. If you currently are not offering your employees benefits, here are some you should look into:

Medical Benefits
Unless you have been living in a cave, you’ve probably seen how concerned the general public is about their health care coverage. With rising health care costs, it can be quite a burden if they have to foot the bill of a medical expense on their own. People want to be able to feel secure in making sure they can take care of their families.

Workers Compensation Insurance
Workers compensation insurance in Utah is another benefit you can offer employees to make sure that they and their families are taken care of if anything were to happen to them while on the job. Different states have different laws regarding it, but be sure to check out and thoroughly discuss your state’s laws with an Utah workers compensation company.

Retirement Plan
Providing some type of retirement plan, like a contribution plan is a good way to help your employees prepare for retirement. Depending on the retirement plan you choose, you will be able to have different benefits. Talk with a financial planner or investment company to help you choose what would be best to offer your employees.

Now that you have some ideas flowing, hold a meeting with your employees and find out what types of benefits they are interested in. Whether it is paid vacation time, workers compensation insurance, retirement plans, medical insurance, etc find out what will make them happy and see what you can do to help meet those needs. Your employees will be happier, job positions will be more appealing, and overall, you’ll have a better work environment.

Healthier Teeth and a Happier You

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Having healthy teeth may mean a variety of things for different types of people. For some, having healthy, clean, white teeth is an image of status, one that exhibits a desire to maintain a certain image. For others, healthy teeth are essential to a long and happy life. Many dental issues have been linked with bone disorders, or even TMJ related pains. Whatever the reason you desire healthy teeth, having the best Boston dentist is a sure fire way of starting off on the right track.

Dentistry is a rapidly changing field that some even say changes almost daily. Sadly, most patients never ask enough questions to their dentists, or if they do ask a lot of questions, they never ask the right ones. Every year we spend more and more money on dental care, especially those who do not have proper dental insurance. This is especially important to those who are getting up there in age, as dental health issues tend to arise more as the years go on.

In an average lifespan you’ll have 3 to 4 tooth related emergencies. When you take into consideration there are about a million different things that can go wrong with your teeth, are you sure you’re seeing the dentist in Boston that is right for you? Take your time and get to know your dentist, as their personality is often a sure fire way of knowing the quality of their work.

Can my dentist really give me the smile I want? Not every Boston cosmetic dentist can give you the smile you truly want. Make certain that your dentist has on-going training and education, learning all of the latest techniques. Have your dentist show you the veeners they use, if there are before and after sample photos, have them show you the differences. It is also important to make certain the photos are of actual patients before being too impressed.

Prevent the Rise of Infectious Diseases

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Diseases that are easily and commonly spread, also known as communicable diseases or infectious diseases, are often caused by pathogens passed from one human to another. The ways that these pathogens are commonly transmitted are most often the result of direct contact and there are several different ways through which direct contact is achieved. Since all communicable or infectious diseases are carried by microorganisms no one is completely safe. Here we will highlight 3 common methods in which infectious diseases find their way to your uninfected body.

  • Sexual – As is usually the case, when these diseases are carried in a sexually active individual, the odds of them spreading are very high. Due to the several other ways these diseases can spread, wearing protection does not necessarily mean you are in the clear. Always let your partner know of your infection, and allow them to make the final decision.

  • Mucus – One of the primary ways an infectious disease can spread is through fluid exchange. As for what is proper in public etiquette, that question is easy to answer, but hard to understand. This means that you’d be very surprised at where other peoples mucus can get, and how often you interact with it.

  • Blood – Communicable diseases are rampant in 3rd world countries due to poor living conditions and children being born already infected. Whether it’s through sharing a needle or accidentally contaminating your blood with the blood of another, the largest way to spread communicable diseases is through the blood. Mothers can pass it on to their children and drug users can pass it through social using. Those who have wonderful intentions in donating blood can often unwittingly contract or pass on their communicable disease. This is why pre-donor screening tests are so heavily enforced.

Here is a list of a few common communicable diseases that have been spreading for years and years.

  • Hepatitis- Whether it be Hep A or Hep B, this autoimmune disease is a viral infection of the liver which can cause inflammation in the effected area. There is no true way to protect yourself from this virus, but again, good hygiene is key.

  • Common Cold- There is an estimated 1 billion colds hitting Americans each year. This viral infection targets children who have not quite built an immunity to this tenured virus. Make certain to wash your hands when coming in contact with anything that could be contaminated.

  • Strep Throat- This bacteria has a high chance to effect teenagers, mostly due to attending school where the bacteria can be easily spread. Avoiding shaking hands, sneezing and coughing are all easy ways to help prevent this hindering sickness. Make certain to catch this early, as antibiotics are a proven method of defeating this foe.

Many people who do not have an infectious disease are blissfully unaware of their existence. The truth is that cases of communicable or infectious diseases rise in number each year all over the world. Keep yourself informed on ways to help prevent the spread of communicable diseases so that you can do you part in helping your community stay infection-free.

Fighting Autoimmunity with Good Health

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

When someone looks at an autoimmune disease list and identifies their specific disease, many questions run through their mind. The sad fact is that autoimmune diseases are not entirely understood and very well may never be. Your immune system is essentially the bouncers of your body. If it detects riff-raff that is trying to make its way into your body and will pinpoint the unfortunate intruder and destroy it. Now, you make think it a bit odd that your immune system can do this without mistakingly attacking the important parts of your body. Well, most of the time it can. Unfortunately, some of the time it does mistake healthy tissues for foreign invaders, and when it does this you’re left with autoimmunity. With autoimmunity comes symptoms, I’ll briefly share a few:

  • Emotional Unbalance- Any time emotions are involved, you’ll find the hypothalamus. The best way to explain this kind of depression is that it’s not “clinical”. It is literally a physical pain that can be interpreted as a deep depression right in the heart.

  • Proper Rest- A few symptoms are related to this luxury those without autoimmune disorders take for granted. Lack of sleep caused by this disease is not uncommon. Many individuals think sleep is a waste of time reserved for those who have nothing better to do with their day. This theory has been disproved many times over. Sleep not only affects the way you perform throughout the day mentally, it also does a great job at balancing your emotions. But when you don’t get enough sleep, the way your cells produce energy may also be affected, leaving a constant sense of weariness that you just can’t seem to shake. Waking up a few times a night is an unfortunate symptom of an autoimmune disease as well and this will leave you with a constant desire to sleep.

  • Physical Repercussions- There could be pain associated with an autoimmune disorder. Your hands and feet may experience loss of feeling or could be constantly cold. This is due to poor circulation of the blood. Joints and muscles can be affected as well, all depending on what muscles you tend to use the most.

The wonderful thing about living life is your ability to make decisions. Now some of the time these decisions may come back to haunt us, but fortunately we have the ability to make things right and move forward with determination from this day on. Many doctors will suggest you take into account the way you’re living your life and properly determine whether or not it is negatively affecting your health or the reverse.

Snow Cones for a Good Cause

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

During the summer months, we see little home made stands selling cool treats so kids and teenagers can make a couple extra bucks. I recently came across a rather interesting article about how one teen set up shop with a greater purpose.

Seventeen-year-old Jordan Battel and two of his friends currently run a snow cone shop in the cabana bar at the Days Inn hotel on Pensacola Beach. They serve up traditional cones as well as “stuffed” snow cones which include a layer of soft serve vanilla ice cream.

Customers are raving about these stuffed snow cones and are much more popular than the cool treats the hotel used to sell. The boys found an old Southern snow cone machine from New Orleans which they purchased online. Other than a cut wire which caused a slight delay in the beginning, the old snow cone has been able to keep up with the steady stream of business.

The business has a greater purpose than just selling snow cones. The boys are donating all of their profits to a non profit organization to fight leukemia and lymphoma as one of the boys was treated for leukemia as a toddler.

In addition, they are getting a valuable lesson in business and entrepreneurship. In order to get the business running they needed to set up a business plan to market to hotels along the beach, get a business license, and a federal employment ID#. They are learning how to manage, set schedules, make decisions, how to create your own opportunities and how much work it takes to make a buck. The lessons they learn this summer will help them build a good foundation for the business world that they will have with them for life.

As I read this article I just thought how great it was that these kids are actually doing something great this summer rather than just wasting it away. Buying snow cone machines and setting up shop is a great way to get experience with out a large investment. Mull it over, share it with your kids, and brainstorm ideas with them so they get the most out of their summer this year.

Wisdom from a 92 year-old white-male university professor? No !!

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

By Amazing Firms Amazing Practices, Gerry Riskin.

    Really ? (No.)

  Really ? (Yes.)

How refreshing for Forbes to offer us 26 Lessons from a 26 Year Old CEO, Shama Kabani.  Her wisdom is well-suited for consideration by Managing Partners of the most significant law firms.  Her ideas are extraordinarily mature for her age which may explain her phenomenal business success.  Here are a few examples:

…planning (#1):

  • A written vision of what you want your company to look like in 3 years is important. The pen (or keyboard!) has power. It isn’t enough to envision your goals in your mind. You must have a blueprint on paper. Every decision you make, ask yourself: does this help me get closer to my vision?

…listening (#2):

  • Learn to listen to your clients. When we started, we were only offering social media consulting services. But, clients quickly demanded more. We eventually ended up serving as their web marketing department. The marketplace will tell you what it needs. You have to listen, and then deliver.

…and #15 (who would expect a 26 year old to remind us to dress appropriately):

  • Appearances matter. I just interviewed an intern who showed up in an outfit more appropriate for an 8 a.m. class. I had to wonder how he would represent us in front of clients. Whether we like it or not, appearances matter. Dress appropriately.

…and #26 (think "Managing Partner" rather than CEO and "firm" rather than company):

  • Being a CEO means being a CVO. CVO stands for Chief Value Officer. Always ask yourself: How can I create value for our clients? Our prospects? Our internal team? The answers will guide you to building a better company.

My opinion: Except for #18 (decide for yourself), I think every single one of the 26 lessons is worthy of consideration by every law firm leader

What’s Protected?

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

In the business world, trademarks, copyrights, and patents are very valuable properties. A common misconception is that these three terms can be used interchangeably and that they protect the same thing. This however is not the case. Let’s take a deeper look at what each term means and how it relates to your business.

Trademark
A trademark as defined by the United States Patent and Trademark office is, “A word, phrase, symbol, or design, or a combination thereof, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others.” Protection of a trademark does not require registration as your rights are established based on your use of it in commerce. There are several reasons why you should register your trademark which will save you a lot of work if you ever have a trademark investigation conducted. Having it registered gives you a public notice of your claim of ownership and gives you the legal presumption that you have exclusive rights to its use. If you have a trademark investigation conducted against some one using it, the registration of the trademark will allow you to bring action against the other person in a federal court.

Copyright
Copyrights give protection to the authors of “original works of authorship” and mainly deal with literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain intellectual works. This includes published and unpublished work. Similar to trademarks, you do not need to register your work to have it protected. Copyrights give the owner of the work the right to reproduce and distribute it, perform or display it publicly, and create derivative works. A copyright is secured when it is created or fixed in a copy for the first time. Many of the advantages of registration are the same as trademark registration.

Patents
The US Patent and Trademark Office defines a patent as, “An intellectual property right granted by the government of the United States of America to an invent to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention.” The three different types of patents include utility (processes, machines, article of manufacture, or composition of matter), design and plant. A patent is usually good for 20 years but extensions or adjustments are available. A patent must be applied for and filed for it to be protected. The United States Patent and Trademark Office does a thorough investigation for all applications to make sure it is unique.

As you can see there are similarities, but also differences between trademarks, copyrights, and patents. If you want to protect your business and its rights, it would be best to file for or register your properties. Conduct copyright, patent, and trademark investigations to make sure no one is using your property as well.

What’s the Benefit of Vinyl Windows?

Monday, July 25th, 2011

There are many different types of windows on the market, and at times it may be sure to know which is right for you. One very popular option are vinyl windows in Utah and here’s why:

Insulation
Vinyl is a material that is a poor thermal conductor meaning it is great at insulator. It keeps the warm air in during the winter and the summer heat out during the summer months. Windows made out of vinyl such as Amsco Windows in Utah, also have air filled chambers whti also help to insulate.

Long Life
Vinyl has a very long life time and is resistant to moisture damage caused by water and rotting. They are virutally maintanence free, as they just need to be cleaned every now and then. If you want a window that will last, choose vinyl.

Appearance
Vinyl windows come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, sizes, and design so they can fit just about any person’s style. Since the color it throughout the vinyl rather than just on the top layer, they are known for being able to better conceal nicks, and scratches. The material also makes them relatively inexpensive to get custom windows to fit your home rather than makeing your home fit the window. If you are a DIYer, they are fairly easy to install.

There are many benefits to vinyl windows in Utah. Figure out what is best for your home, your needs, and your style and contact a window contractor to get started.

More Efficient Work With Excel

Monday, July 25th, 2011

In the daily grind at work, there are many tasks that I perform over and over again. Sometimes, I wish there was a program that would automatically do it for me. If you’ve ever thought the same thing, you’re in luck.

In Microsoft Excel you can automate a task using a macro. According to Microsoft’s website a macros is a series of command and functions that are stored in a Microsoft Visual Basic module and can be run whenever you need to perform the task. If you have a larger project or want to get some ideas on how Microsoft Excel can speed up your work, it would be a good idea to talk with an Excel consultant. But if it is a simple task, follow the guidelines below:

Recording a Macro
The first thing you will need to do is record the macros. What this means is Excel will store the information for each step as your go through a series of commands. To do this you will first need to add the “Developer Tab” in Excel if you do not already have it. Click on the Office button in the upper left corner and then select “Excel Options”. In the window that opens, select the “Popular” option and then “Show Developer Tab in the Ribbon”. Then click “Ok”.

Once the developer tab appears, you will see your macro options. But before we begin recording, you will need to add the worksheet title that will be formatted. You do not want to include the title in the macro so we need to add it to the worksheet. Click on A1 in your worksheet, type in the title, and then hit enter on your keyboard. Now we are ready to record.

You should have the Developers tab already open. In the upper left, select “Record Macro”. This opens a new window where you will need to enter the details for the macro. Give the macro a descriptive name, being sure to start it with a letter and no spaces. If you would like to create a shortcut, fill it in in the space provided. For the next step, you have a few different options. You can store it in the workbook, which would only make it available for this file, you can store it in a new workbook which would make it only available in the new file, or in a personal macro workbook which makes it available in all excel files. The final step is an optional description.

Selecting “OK” will begin recording. Once recording perform the steps your task requires. When finished with a process click, “Stop Recording”.

Running the Macro
To run your recorded macro, select “Sheet 2″ on the bottom of your workbook. Then when it has opened, select cell A1. Type in your title and select the Developer Tab again. Click on the Macros button to view your recorded macro. Select the one you want to perform and click run. It should automatically run the steps you previously recorded.

Easier than you thought? Once you get used to using macros you’ll think of new functions you will want this program to do for you. At that point enlist the help of an Excel programmer and keep you business running smooth and efficiently!
