Using Social Media to Promote Daybreak Utah’s TRAX Light Rail

Monday, July 25th, 2011

On the Daybreak Utah Homes for sale website a clock has been counting down the days until the Daybreak community will receive TRAX Light Rail service. What is almost more interesting about getting service to the area is how it has been promoted. On the first public demonstration ride, tickets were reserved for families of well known Utah “Mommy Bloggers”. The Utah Transit Authority did this with the hopes that these “Mommy Bloggers” would bread the word about train safety for kids and their parents. The service is expected to begin on August 7th.

At Gardner Village in West Jordan, 30 bloggers and 95 of their children boarded the new Mid-Jordan and West Valley City TRAX lines for a round trip to the Daybreak Townhomes area. Children were given goody bags with an engineer’s hat, a train whistle, candy, and a cardboard model of a TRAX train. Bloggers also received free tickets to give to their readers.

Rather than having a traditional news conference, UTA is relying on getting the word out through their “Mommy Bloggers.” Quite a out of the box idea. Maybe a new chapter for UTA and other government agencies? UTA seems to have already hopped aboard the social media bandwagon with increasing promotions through their Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr accounts as well as their own blog and website. We’ll have to wait and watch to see if it’s paid off.

Working with Babies

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Some photographers refuse to work with babies. They can cry, take a lot of patience, and can be hard to pose. When you do get that sweet shot of these little ones it can be truly rewarding. You just need to know what to expect and work with it to become successful at photographing babies.

Newborns
A baby is considered a newborn for the first 2 weeks. At this stage they are so small and fragile. Proud parents love to get beautiful photos of them at this stage. The problem about this stage is they don’t have much strength or control for posing and they may cry from the beginning to end of the shoot.

To get around the first problem, there are several photo props for babies that you can use to help pose them. At this age they are amazingly flexible so you can maneuver them in to precious little bundles which may not be possible after two weeks. Take a look online for baskets, blankets, cocoons, ottomans, etc with fun and interesting textures for some really amazing photographs.

For the second problem, some of the most beautiful photographs can be those where they are crying. Get creative with your angles and be prepared to catch that serene shot between the crying. It’s also a good idea to get mom or dad in the picture for some tender photos of them consoling their little one.

Babies
When newborns reach the baby stage, you can really get creative and have some fun with them. At 6 weeks, their first smile usually arrives and there will be less sleeping and more interaction. This is when you can start seeing their little personality come through. They still aren’t able to sit by themselves, so be sure to incorporate baby photography props into your poses.

As they get older, 6 to 12 months, you get even more interaction from them and can have a lot of fun in your photo shoot. They’ll be starting to sit, teeth will be coming in, they’ll be crawling, and laughing as well. Encourage mom and dad to get involved.

As a photographer, don’t fear baby shoots. Prepare ahead of time so you have realistic expectations. As always, it’s a good idea to look at other baby photographers’ to get some ideas. Photographing little ones at this age is truly rewarding.

What your Mouth is Telling You about your Health

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Your dental health can offer a lot of clues as to what state your overall health is in. Many people do not realize that problems within your mouth can have an affect on the rest of your body. Understanding this can help you to protect yourself and keep yourself healthy.

In your mouth at this moment are thousands of bacteria. The majority of these bacteria are harmless and with your natural defenses and regular brushing and flossing, they’ll stay that way. When bacteria get out of control they cause oral infections. The dental procedures, medications, or treatments which reduce saliva change the balance of bacteria or cross normal protective barriers and allow for bacteria to enter your bloodstream. Not only do you have oral health problems but now it is spreading throughout you body. A double whammy!

The following are a diseases that research has linked to bad oral health in some cases:

  1. Endocarditis: This is an infection of the inner lining of the heart. In cases where it is traced back to bad dental care, it is usually due to patients who have had gum disease or dental procedures that cut the gums allowing bacteria to enter the blood stream.
  2. Cardiovascular Disease: Just as with endocarditis, research suggests heart disease, clogged arteries, and stroke can be linked back to oral bacteria, most likely due to periodonits.
  3. Premature Birth and Low Birth Rates: Studies show that gum diseases have been linked back to problems in pregnancy
  4. Diabetes: Diabetes is a disease where people do not have adequate blood sugar control. This disease reduces one’s resistance to infection so many develop more frequent and severe infections. This caused tooth loss. Cosmetic dentistry Beverly Hills procedures can help to correct your teeth however, they can be costly.
  5. HIV/AIDS: It is common to find oral problems in those who suffer from HIV/AIDS, most in the form of painful lesions in the mucosa.

If you have had any changes in your overall health be sure to tell your cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills. Protect yourself everyday by practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth, floss your teeth, eat a healthy diet, and watch for symptoms. Take care of your teeth and they’ll help to take care of you.

Angry Birds help with best practices in one of India’s most sophisticated law firms

Monday, July 4th, 2011

By Amazing Firms Amazing Practices, Gerry Riskin.

I received this correspondence from Hoshedar Wadia, a partner in one of India’s most sophisticated law firms, Juris Corp.  This firm deals in matters that range up to the hundreds of millions of US dollars in sophisticated areas like Capital Markets, Structured Finance, Securitization and so on.  In the spirit of disclosure, I have had the privilege of serving this firm.  Do you believe the protocol contained in the following correspondence could serve your firm as well?

"We just shared something with our new recruits as part of their orientation and I thought I would drop you a line cause you have used examples like this very effectively in the past with us.

"There is a game ‘Angry Birds’ that I have on my mobile that is available for PC download as well.

"You have to shoot birds at structures (and at a pig) and make points to go to the next level. Each level is tougher and there seem to be an unlimited number of levels. At each level, you can try any number of times. But in the version available on my phone, after 2 attempts (and failures), it asks me if I want to connect to the internet and see how it is done (on you tube). If you view the link, the task suddenly becomes easier (not easy – but significantly easier).

"Message:
"Like angry birds, in Juris Corp too:
"(i)         Please try for yourself to get the results – try once try twice but if you don’t get it by then then seek help (ego and stubbornness have little place in a knowledge-based industry);
"(ii)        The reason you must try yourself is because you may come up with a better way of doing something than the internet or ‘online help’ version will show you;
"(iii)       The reason you must take help after a few tries is because you owe the Firm and the Client, if any, (a) a quick turnaround (so it is not acceptable that you try and try and try till you succeed); (b) best costs (which means you don’t re-invent) – but always subject to you trying first on your own (the reason you are in Juris Corp is because somebody believes you may find a better way);
"(iv)      Look at the online version/precedents, even if you succeed – to see if it could have been done better?
(v)       Learn and adapt – the higher levels will always require you to draw from what you have learnt at the lower levels."

Punchline: Too many partners throw their associates to the research and protocol winds with a sink or swim attitude.  This policy deprives both associates and clients of what they deserve.  I think Juris Corp has it right and I am grateful to my friend, Hoshedar Wadia (Juris Corp partner), for granting me permission to share this with you.
