As an Atlanta injury attorney practicing throughout Georgia with a special interest in spinal cord and traumatic brain injury cases, I was glad to see that Shepherd Center, within walking distance from my office, will host the North American Neurorehabilitation Symposium on August 27 and 28, 2010.

The program is designed primarily for medical professionals and users of Houma rehab equipment, and will cover a variety of spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation topics including several presentations on aspects of robotics in rehab.

I would like to attend if possible, but first would have to resolve conflicts with a trial calendar and a foundation board meeting.

Mild traumatic brain injury sometimes seems like an oxymoron. It's only mild if it happens to someone you don't know.

The Centers for Disease Control here in Atlanta, together with the American College of Emergency Physicians, recently released updated guidelines for physicians in assessing patients with suspected mild traumatic brain injury.  The release includes:

• Updated Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Management Guideline for Adults. These guidelines focus on identifying neurologically intact patients who have potentially significant intracranial injuries, and identifying patients with risk for prolonged postconcussive symptoms to ensure proper discharge planning.
•  Pocket Card  for physicians provides fingertip access guidelines, which includes talking points to use with patients.
•  Patient Wallet Card

This gives ER doctors and other practitioners easy access to the essentials of the most recently revised clinical policy when they need it fast.

As a Georgia attorney representing people with spinal cord and brain injuries, I am always alert to new treatments that offer hope for a better life for them.

New animal studies at Children's Hospital of Boston showed the suppression of the SOCS3 gene, an inhibitor of a growth pathway called mTOR -- resulted in vigorous growth of axons and reactivation of nerve pathways.

Limited studies with mice are a long way from clinical treatment of humans, but it sounds promising.
